My immediate neighbor across the via from me, lives in a sweet set of two rooms under an arched courtyard. We met in the street with my contractor one day and she came right out to welcome me. She invited me in to her place, sat me down and made me coffee and fed me homemade cookies. She prepared the coffee behind the curtain in her living room where her kitchen is hidden and she cooks everything. She gave me all the gossip on the entire street ! She showed me all her scars from her six different surgeries, told me "how it was back in day when the street was filled with families". She also gave me her recipe for Baked Rice with Eggplant. Back to that later.
Marina told me how happy everyone was to see my house getting renovated and that they all hated the ugly tile that we removed from exterior. I think we are going to be good neighbors.
Marina, still living solo in her sweet little place despite ongoing aging issues, she has a home care person and her son and daughter visit her everyday. They all sit in the flower filled courtyard with her neighbor. She is whip smart and gets "how people are" in subtle ways. She made me a favorite dish of mine, zucchini and eggs all cooked in one pan, which is a "thing" here, a meal cooked all in one pot.
Marina's daughter Anna Maria invited me to join the weekend hiking and exercise group that meets at Porto Selvaggio for a long hour hike to the water: created for those over 60. I have met some lovely local women this way, so that I am not only socializing in an expat group, although I LOVE all my international friends!
