Pietra Leccese and beyond....

Picture
The local stone is quarried all over the Salento: one see the marks of former quarries on the landscape.  The most important structures, where made of pale yellow Pietra Leccese, easy to carve. Everyday houses were constructed of tufa block and other soft stone.  Lecce is a city synonymous with this beautiful material and the facades of most churches in the region are carved from it.

Below is a photo album of a local stone carver: his family has sculpted the local stone for 3 generations. They make rustic and contemporary elements, including sinks, balustrades, fireplaces and light fixtures....provide them with a technical drawing and they can do anything.  We saw their entire operation, from sawing the blocks to finish.
